Alligator Reef

Entry and exit are from the dive boat. The relatively shallow depth and typically calm conditions in the lee of the reef make this site suitable for divers of all experience levels.

Accessible only by boat, with numerous dive operators in Islamorada offering daily trips to the reef. The boat ride is typically 15-20 minutes from shore.

The reef supports diverse marine ecosystems. Common sightings include various tropical fish species such as parrotfish, angelfish, and butterflyfish. Larger inhabitants include nurse sharks, southern stingrays, and sea turtles. The reef structures provide shelter for lobsters, crabs, and moray eels. The sandy areas between reef formations are home to garden eels and occasional peacock flounders.

The reef system includes various formations ranging from patch reefs to more developed spur-and-groove structures. Water depths vary from 15 feet over the shallowest portions to 45 feet in deeper channels. The lighthouse serves as a convenient reference point, with multiple dive sites scattered around its base. The reef structure extends over a substantial area, allowing for multiple dives in different sections of the same general reef system.

Parking is available at various marinas in Islamorada where dive boats depart. Most offer paid parking with day rates.

Facilities are limited to what's provided on the dive boats. Most charter operations offer basic amenities including freshwater rinse, restrooms, and refreshments.

Moderate to high, especially during peak tourist season. The extensive reef system allows divers to spread out, even when multiple boats are present. The site is popular with both divers and snorkelers.

Currents can develop, particularly on the outer edges of the reef or during tide changes. The shallow reef top requires careful buoyancy control to avoid contact with fragile coral structures. Fire coral is common on the reef and can cause painful stings if touched. During summer months, water temperature can exceed 85°F, requiring minimal exposure protection but increasing the risk of overheating on the boat between dives. As a protected area within the sanctuary, collecting or touching marine life is prohibited.
