Breakers Reef

Entry and exit are from the dive boat. The area is known for its strong Gulf Stream currents, making drift diving the standard approach. Boat captains typically coordinate entry and exit points based on current conditions.

Accessible only by boat, with numerous dive operators in Palm Beach County offering daily trips to the reef. The boat ride is typically 15-20 minutes from shore.

The reef supports an incredible diversity of marine life. Regular residents include tropical fish species, nurse sharks, moray eels, and sea turtles. Seasonal visitors include goliath grouper (August-October), various shark species, and occasional manta rays. The ledges provide habitat for lobsters, crabs, and a variety of invertebrates. The reef is also known for spotted eagle ray encounters.

The reef system consists of a series of parallel limestone ledges with heights varying from 3-15 feet. These ledges create dramatic undercuts, small caves, and swim-throughs. The reef runs north-south along the coastline at depths ranging from 45-85 feet. Sand channels separate the reef sections, providing navigation references during drift dives. The entire reef system stretches for several miles, allowing for multiple dive sites within the general area.

Parking is available at marinas in Palm Beach County where dive boats depart, including Riviera Beach Marina and Lake Worth Inlet. Most offer paid parking with day rates.

Facilities are limited to what's provided on the dive boats. Most charter operations offer basic amenities including freshwater rinse, restrooms, and refreshments.

Moderate throughout the year. The extensive reef system allows divers to spread out, even when multiple boats are present. Peak season (May-September) sees increased traffic, but the drift diving format helps minimize congestion at any particular spot.

Strong Gulf Stream currents are common and can change unexpectedly. Proper drift diving techniques and surface signaling equipment are essential. Reef sharks and other shark species are regular visitors; maintain appropriate distance and do not disturb them. The ledges and overhangs should be approached with caution to avoid stirring up sediment or damaging fragile growth. During summer months, watch for fishing lines as the area is popular for both commercial and recreational fishing.
