Lehua Crater

Boat entry and exit, typically with a backward roll entry and ladder exit. The crossing can be rough, and surface conditions may vary significantly based on currents and wind. Dive operators will provide specific briefings based on the day's conditions.

Accessible only by boat, with a crossing that takes 1.5-2 hours each way from Kauai. The site is subject to ocean conditions and is often only diveable during summer months when seas are calmer. Few operators make the journey, so advance booking is essential.

Abundant marine life includes schooling butterflyfish, triggerfish, and unicornfish. Common sightings include eagle rays, monk seals (endemic to Hawaii), white-tip reef sharks, and various eel species. Dolphins are frequently encountered during the crossing or near the crater. Seasonal whale sightings (December-April) are common.

The site features vertical lava rock walls dropping to 100+ feet, underwater arches, ledges, and sheltered areas with coral growth. The crescent shape of the crater creates varied dive environments, from exposed walls facing the open ocean to protected areas with calmer conditions. Sand channels cut through rocky areas, and large volcanic boulders create swim-throughs and hiding spots for marine life.

As a boat-only dive, parking depends on your charter's departure point. Most boats depart from Port Allen on Kauai's southwest coast, which has ample parking near the harbor facilities.

Facilities are limited to what's provided on the dive boat. Most charters to Lehua are full-day trips and include meals, refreshments, and basic amenities. No facilities exist on Lehua itself, which is a protected seabird sanctuary.

Low, as the remote location, challenging boat journey, and limited number of operators naturally restrict visitor numbers. Even when multiple boats are present, the extensive dive area prevents overcrowding.

Open ocean conditions can create strong and unpredictable currents. Surge and swells can affect diving conditions even on calm days. The remote location means emergency assistance is far away - conservative dive planning is essential. Depth and currents can lead to rapid air consumption. Respect wildlife, particularly monk seals, which are protected and endangered native species.
