Sheraton Caverns

Entry and exit are from a sandy beach that can have moderate surf, particularly during south swells. Time your entry between wave sets. Once past the break, conditions typically calm. Be aware of snorkelers and swimmers in this popular area. Exit at the same location, watching for waves during your approach to shore.

Shore dive with entry from Poipu Beach. From the parking area, it's a short walk to the beach entry point. The swim to the cavern area is approximately 100-150 yards offshore.

The caverns host a variety of marine life including several turtle cleaning stations, various moray eel species, and reef fish such as butterflyfish, surgeonfish, and triggerfish. Night dives often reveal octopuses, slipper lobsters, and basket stars. White-tip reef sharks occasionally rest in the larger caverns.

The site features several interconnected lava tube caverns and arches at depths ranging from 30-55 feet. Most caverns have multiple entrances and exits with good light penetration, making them accessible to properly trained recreational divers. The largest cavern spans approximately 60 feet long and opens into a cathedral-like space with light streaming through ceiling holes. The surrounding area includes coral reef formations, rocky outcroppings, and sandy patches.

Limited public beach parking is available near the Sheraton Kauai Resort. Arrive early as spaces fill quickly. Some divers park at nearby Poipu Beach Park and take a short walk to the entry point.

Public restrooms and outdoor showers are available at nearby Poipu Beach Park. No dedicated dive facilities on site, though several dive shops operate in the Poipu area within a short driving distance.

Moderate to high, especially during peak tourism seasons. The site is popular with both guided groups and independent divers. Multiple caverns provide options to avoid crowds. Night dives typically see fewer divers and offer a different perspective on the site.

Proper buoyancy control is essential when navigating the caverns to avoid damaging formations and stirring up sediment. While the caverns have multiple entry/exit points and allow natural light, basic overhead environment protocols should be followed. The site is exposed to south swells which can create surge within the caverns and challenging entry/exit conditions. Lionfish, an invasive species, are occasionally spotted and should not be approached due to their venomous spines.
