Malaga Cove

Entry and exit points are rocky and can be challenging, especially during low tide or high surf. Booties and gloves are recommended for protection.

Beach access requires a walk down a path to the cove. The trail can be steep and slippery, especially when carrying dive gear.

Dense kelp forests harbor various fish species, including garibaldi, sheephead, and bass. Lobsters and octopuses are common in the rocky areas. Bat rays and guitarfish may be spotted in sandy patches.

The site features a mix of rocky reef and kelp forest environments. Large boulders create interesting formations and swim-throughs. The reef slopes gradually to deeper water, with sand channels interspersed among the rocks.

Limited street parking is available in the residential area near the cove. Be mindful of parking restrictions and local regulations.

There are no immediate facilities at the dive site. The nearest restrooms are at Redondo Beach, about a mile north.

Low to moderate throughout the year. The somewhat challenging access and rocky entry point limit the number of casual visitors. Weekends see increased diver traffic, but the site rarely feels crowded compared to more accessible Los Angeles County dive spots.

The rocky shoreline can be extremely slippery and treacherous during entry and exit. Time entries and exits with wave sets for safer transitions. Sea urchins are abundant; careful buoyancy control is essential to avoid painful encounters. Strong surge can develop even during modest swells, particularly in shallow rocky areas. The site is exposed to open ocean conditions, so check weather forecasts carefully before planning your dive.
