Thunderbolt Wreck

Entry and exit are from the dive boat. Due to depth and potential currents, most operators use descent/ascent lines. Advanced certification is recommended, though intermediate divers can explore the upper portions of the wreck with proper supervision.

Accessible only by boat, with several dive operators in Marathon offering regular trips to the wreck. The boat ride is typically 30-45 minutes from shore.

The wreck has developed into a vibrant artificial reef. Schools of barracuda often circle the superstructure, while goliath grouper frequently shelter within the hull. The exterior is encrusted with colorful sponges, soft corals, and various invertebrates. Reef fish including angelfish, butterflyfish, and jacks inhabit the structure, while pelagic species such as sharks, rays, and turtles make occasional appearances.

The ship sits upright on a sandy bottom with the deck at approximately 75 feet and the sand at 115-120 feet. The intact structure includes the wheelhouse, masts, and various deck features. The vessel was prepared for diving with large access holes cut into the hull to allow for limited and safe penetration by properly trained divers. The surrounding area is predominantly sandy with some small natural reef patches nearby.

Parking is available at various marinas in Marathon where dive boats depart, including Marathon Marina and Duck Key Marina. Most offer paid parking with day rates.

Facilities are limited to what's provided on the dive boats. Most charter operations offer basic amenities including freshwater rinse, restrooms, and refreshments.

Moderate throughout the year. The wreck's depth and offshore location naturally limit the number of divers. During peak tourist seasons, you might encounter multiple dive boats at the site, but the wreck is large enough to accommodate several groups without feeling crowded.

The depth requires careful monitoring of bottom time and gas supply. Currents can develop, especially on the surface and around the superstructure. Penetration into the wreck should only be attempted by properly trained and equipped divers. Lionfish, an invasive species with venomous spines, have established populations on the wreck and should not be approached. Fishing boats sometimes anchor near artificial reefs; be alert for fishing lines when ascending.
