About This Site
The Thunderbolt is a 188-foot cable-laying ship intentionally sunk in 1986 to create an artificial reef. Located approximately six miles offshore from Marathon in the Florida Keys, this intact wreck sits upright on the sandy bottom and has developed into a thriving artificial reef ecosystem and popular dive attraction.

Offshore wreck 6 miles south of Marathon. The Keys chain blocks north and west swells almost completely, but east through south-southwest swells arrive with full Atlantic power. Deep sand bottom keeps surge minimal even in moderate swells, though surface can be rough during east wind events.
