Anacapa - Cathedral Cove

Entry and exit are from the dive boat. The protected location inside Cathedral Cove typically offers calm surface conditions, though surge can be present below the surface.

Accessible only by boat, with charter operators running regular trips from mainland ports. The boat ride is approximately 1-1.5 hours from Ventura Harbor.

The site hosts an incredible diversity of marine life. The kelp forests are home to bright orange garibaldi, sheephead, bass, and rockfish. Sea lions frequently visit and playfully interact with divers. Nudibranchs, sea stars, and anemones cover rocky surfaces, while lobsters and moray eels hide in crevices. During appropriate seasons, you may encounter harbor seals, bat rays, and occasionally schools of larger fish like yellowtail.

Cathedral Cove features dramatic underwater topography with towering rock walls, swim-through arches, and caverns that create the 'cathedral' effect as light filters through. Dense kelp forests provide vertical structure throughout much of the site. Water depths range from 20 feet at the top of the reef structures to 70+ feet at the sand channels. The cove's partially protected location provides some shelter from strong currents that may be present in more exposed areas of the island.

Parking is available at the harbors where dive boats depart, primarily Ventura and Channel Islands harbors. Most offer paid day or hourly parking.

Facilities are limited to what's provided on the dive boats. Most charter operations offer basic amenities including freshwater rinse, restrooms, and food service. There are no facilities on the uninhabited East Anacapa Island except for basic National Park visitor amenities at Landing Cove.

Moderate on weekends and during summer months. The remote nature of the site limits casual visitors, but its popularity as one of the signature Channel Islands dive experiences means it regularly hosts dive boats. Weekday diving typically offers a less crowded experience.

While the cove offers protection, surge can be powerful even on calm days, particularly in shallow areas and caverns. Water temperatures range from 55-65°F depending on season, requiring proper thermal protection. Boat traffic can be present in the vicinity; use a dive flag when surfacing away from your charter vessel. The remote location means conservative diving practices are advised, as emergency medical facilities are hours away. As part of the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, special protections apply and collecting is prohibited.
