Shag Rock

Entry and exit are from the dive boat. Due to the exposed location and potential for strong currents, drift diving protocols are often employed, with divers being picked up by the boat at the end of their drift.

Accessible only by boat, primarily via overnight or multi-day dive charters. The boat ride is approximately 6-8 hours from mainland ports, making this a destination typically visited on longer dive excursions.

Shag Rock is renowned for its impressive marine biodiversity. Large pelagic visitors include sea lions, harbor seals, and various shark species. Schools of black sea bass, yellowtail, and jack mackerel are frequently encountered. The rock structure itself is covered with colorful invertebrates including anemones, corals, nudibranchs, and sponges. In the surrounding waters, divers may spot ocean sunfish (mola mola), blue sharks, and occasionally manta rays during warmer months.

The site features a dramatic underwater pinnacle that rises from depths of 100+ feet to within 15-20 feet of the surface. The rock formation has sheer walls, deep crevices, and underwater arches. Strong currents have created rich invertebrate growth on current-facing surfaces. The surrounding area features sandy bottom with occasional rocky outcroppings. The exposed location creates a high-energy environment that supports rich marine ecosystems distinctly different from more protected Channel Islands sites.

Parking is available at the harbors where multi-day dive boats depart, primarily San Pedro and Long Beach harbors. Most offer paid long-term parking for overnight trips.

Facilities are limited to what's provided on the live-aboard dive boats. These typically include bunk accommodations, freshwater showers, restrooms, and full meal service. There are no facilities on uninhabited Santa Barbara Island except for basic National Park amenities near the landing cove.

Very low. Due to its remote location, challenging conditions, and the specialized nature of trips to Santa Barbara Island, Shag Rock rarely sees more than one dive boat at a time. Often, divers will have this spectacular site entirely to themselves and their boat mates.

Strong currents can develop rapidly around Shag Rock, sometimes making the site undivable even on scheduled trips. The exposed location can experience rough sea conditions, and dives may be canceled if weather deteriorates. Water temperatures typically range from 55-65°F depending on season, with thermoclines often present. The area is known for encounters with large marine life including sea lions and sharks; maintain appropriate distance and behavior. The extremely remote location means emergency medical facilities are many hours away; conservative diving practices are mandatory.
