Entry and exit are from the dive boat, with variable conditions depending on ocean swells and currents. Divers should be comfortable with boat diving procedures.

Accessible only by boat, with numerous dive operators in San Diego offering daily trips to the site. The boat ride is typically 20-30 minutes from Mission Bay.

The wreck has become a thriving artificial reef, home to diverse marine life. Common residents include various rockfish species, lingcod, cabezon, and giant sea bass. The structure is covered with invertebrates including anemones, nudibranchs, and sea stars. Large schools of blacksmith and jack mackerel frequently circle the wreck, and sea lions often visit the site.

The ship lies on its port side at a depth of 60-100 feet, creating a complex three-dimensional structure. The main deck, bridge, smoke stacks, and various compartments provide numerous exploration opportunities. Some areas have been modified with larger access points to facilitate safer diving. The surrounding seafloor is primarily sand, with visibility typically ranging from 15-60 feet depending on conditions.

Parking is available at Mission Bay marinas where dive boats depart, including Mission Bay Sport Center and Seaforth Landing. Most offer paid parking.

Facilities are limited to what's provided on dive boats and at the marinas. Most charter operations offer basic amenities including restrooms and light refreshments.

Moderate to high throughout the year, as this is San Diego's most popular wreck dive. Summer weekends often see multiple dive boats at the site simultaneously. The large size of the wreck allows divers to spread out once in the water. For a less crowded experience, consider weekday diving or early morning departures.

Strong currents can develop around the wreck, particularly during tide changes. The wreck contains numerous potential entanglement hazards including cables, wires, and deteriorating structures. While penetration is possible, it should only be attempted by properly trained and equipped divers. The depth and complexity of the wreck demand good buoyancy control and air management. The site is sometimes affected by thermoclines that can dramatically reduce visibility and water temperature.
