La Jolla Cove is home to a diverse array of marine life, including garibaldi, California sheephead, kelp bass, opaleye, and various species of sharks and rays such as horn sharks, leopard sharks, and round stingrays. The area is also known for sightings of California sea lions, harbor seals, and occasionally green sea turtles. The kelp forests and rocky reefs provide habitats for numerous invertebrates, including spiny lobsters, sheep crabs, and various types of sea stars.

The underwater topology of La Jolla Cove is varied and exciting. It features four main habitats: the seagrass meadow, kelp beds, reefs, and sea caves. The kelp beds are a highlight, forming an underwater forest that divers can swim through. The reefs are covered in algae and seagrass, providing shelter for many marine species. These caves are mostly shallow with big, open-air chambers, making them accessible even for novice divers when conditions are favorable.

It's recommended to arrive early to secure a spot close to the dive site. The main parking areas are within a short walking distance from the beach entry points.

Extremely high, as this is one of San Diego's most popular tourist destinations. The beach area is small and gets very crowded, especially on weekends and during summer. Divers often need to navigate through swimmers and snorkelers near shore. Early morning diving (before 8 AM) offers the best opportunity to avoid crowds.

Respect the local seal population and maintain appropriate distance – these are wild animals that can become defensive if they feel threatened. The seawall creates unusual current patterns that can surprise inexperienced divers. Watch for boat traffic beyond the protected area.
