Ruby E

Entry and exit are from the dive boat. Typically more sheltered than other wrecks in the area, making it suitable for intermediate divers.

Accessible only by boat, with numerous dive operators in San Diego offering trips to the site. Often combined with other Wreck Alley dives. The boat ride is typically 20-30 minutes from Mission Bay.

The wreck is encrusted with invertebrates and hosts a variety of fish species. Common sightings include rockfish, lingcod, garibaldi, and schools of blacksmith. Nudibranchs, anemones, and sea stars cover much of the structure, and larger visitors like sea lions and harbor seals are often observed.

The ship sits upright on a sandy bottom at approximately 85 feet. Unlike the Yukon, the Ruby E is more compact and straightforward to navigate. The wheelhouse, deck, and some compartments are accessible for penetration by properly trained divers. The site is often affected by surges from ocean swells, so careful buoyancy control is essential.

Parking is available at Mission Bay marinas where dive boats depart, including Mission Bay Sport Center and Seaforth Landing. Most offer paid parking.

Facilities are limited to what's provided on dive boats and at the marinas. Most charter operations offer basic amenities including restrooms and light refreshments.

Moderate throughout the year. The Ruby E is popular but typically less crowded than the Yukon. Often, multiple dive sites in Wreck Alley are visited on the same trip, distributing divers across different wrecks. Weekday diving offers the most private experience.

While more beginner-friendly than other wrecks in San Diego, the Ruby E still presents hazards including potential entanglement from fishing lines and deteriorating structures. Limited visibility and surge can make navigation challenging. Penetration should only be attempted by properly trained divers with appropriate equipment. Watch for boat traffic on the surface during ascent and descent.
