North Monastery

Entry and exit can be extremely challenging due to the steep beach and powerful surf. Only attempt diving here if you're experienced with surf entries and exits.

The dive site is accessed directly from the beach. Be aware that this beach is also known as 'Mortuary Beach' due to its dangerous shore break and strong currents.

The deep water and proximity to the canyon attract a variety of marine life. Divers might encounter lingcod, cabezon, various rockfish species, and occasionally larger pelagics like leopard sharks or bat rays.

The northern section features rocky reef structures and boulders leading to a steep underwater slope and the deep submarine canyon. Rich kelp forests can be found in the shallower areas.

There's a parking lot across the street from the beach. It's usually less crowded than other Monterey dive sites.

Facilities are limited. There are no restrooms or showers on site. The nearest amenities are in Carmel, a short drive away.

Low to moderate throughout the year. Despite its accessibility, the challenging conditions and reputation for dangerous shore break keep many casual divers away. On weekends with favorable conditions, you might encounter 10-20 dive teams spread across the beach. During weekdays and in winter months, you may have the site to yourself.

This site is notorious for its dangerous shore break and strong rip currents – several fatalities have occurred here. Enter and exit only during calm conditions and preferably at high tide. The steep underwater slope leads quickly to depths beyond recreational limits; maintain careful depth awareness. Strong and unpredictable currents can develop, particularly near the canyon edge. Surface conditions can change rapidly, potentially making exit impossible; always maintain enough air reserve for contingencies.
