Point Lobos

Entry and exit can be challenging due to surge and rocks. Most divers use the boat ramp at Whalers Cove for a safer entry.

Access is via Whalers Cove. There's a boat ramp for those with small boats, or divers can enter from the shore.

Point Lobos is renowned for its biodiversity. Divers often encounter sea otters, harbor seals, sea lions, and various fish species including lingcod and cabezon. The kelp forests are home to numerous invertebrates, and lucky divers might spot leopard sharks or wolf eels.

The underwater landscape features dramatic rock formations, walls, and extensive kelp forests. The bottom composition varies from rocky reefs to sand channels.

Parking is limited and by reservation only. Divers must obtain a diving permit in advance.

The reserve has basic facilities including restrooms and picnic areas. There are no on-site dive shops, so come prepared with all necessary equipment.

Low, due to the reservation system that limits the number of divers to 15 teams per day. This controlled access ensures uncrowded diving conditions even on weekends and holidays. The underwater area is spacious, allowing divers to spread out and enjoy the pristine environment without interference from others. This is one of the least crowded shore diving experiences in California.

Surge can be powerful, especially in shallow areas and during periods of swell. The rocky entry and exit points can be slippery and dangerous. Surface conditions inside Whalers Cove may appear calm while outside conditions are rough; check forecasts carefully. Boat traffic is present, as small vessels launch from the ramp; use a dive flag when surfacing. Marine life including healthy sea lion populations should be given appropriate space to avoid disturbance.
