5 Caves

Entry is from a small, somewhat protected cove at Makena Landing. Conditions can vary from calm to moderately challenging depending on surf and tide. The entry point has a mix of sand and rocky areas. Time your entry between wave sets and watch for sea urchins on rocks. Exit at the same location, being careful with surge near shore.

Shore dive with entry from Makena Landing Beach Park. A surface swim of approximately 150-200 yards is required to reach the cave area. Most divers enter from the small cove and head south along the coastline.

The site is known for its resident green sea turtles, which are often found resting in the caves. Other marine life includes butterfly fish, surgeon fish, triggerfish, moorish idols, and occasional eagle rays. Reef eels, octopuses, and various nudibranchs can be spotted by attentive divers. During winter months, humpback whale songs may be heard underwater.

The main attraction is a series of five interconnected lava tubes and caves running parallel to shore at depths of 30-70 feet. The caves are spacious enough for safe exploration with multiple entrance and exit points allowing natural light to filter through. Between the caves and shore, a sloping reef with coral formations and sandy patches provides additional exploration opportunities. The site gradually slopes deeper as you move away from shore.

Limited parking is available along the street near Makena Landing. Arrive early as spaces fill quickly, especially on weekends. There is no dedicated lot, so be respectful of residential areas and park only in designated spaces.

Basic facilities include portable toilets at Makena Landing Beach Park. There are no showers, gear rinse stations, or equipment rentals on site. The nearest full-service dive shops are in Kihei, about 15-20 minutes away by car.

Moderate to high, especially during peak tourist season and weekends. The site is popular with both guided dive groups and independent divers. Early morning dives typically offer the least crowded conditions and best visibility. Despite its popularity, the numerous caves and extensive reef area allow divers to spread out.

Be cautious when exploring caves and swim-throughs - maintain proper buoyancy to avoid damaging the fragile ceiling structures and stirring up sediment. While the caves are large enough for safe exploration by recreational divers, proper cave diving protocols should be followed. Surface conditions can change rapidly, particularly in afternoon when trade winds pick up. The site is exposed to south swells which can create challenging entry/exit conditions and reduce visibility. Respect resting turtles in caves by maintaining appropriate distance and not blocking their access to the surface.
