Bird Rock

Entry and exit are from the dive boat. The site's relatively protected location often provides calmer surface conditions for comfortable entry and exit compared to more exposed sites around Catalina.

Accessible only by boat, with numerous dive operators offering trips from the mainland. The boat ride is typically 1.5-2 hours, depending on departure location. From Two Harbors, the site is just a short boat ride away, making it convenient for visitors staying on the island.

The kelp forest ecosystem supports abundant marine life. Common sightings include garibaldi, sheephead, kelp bass, and schools of senoritas and blacksmith. The rocky reef areas provide habitat for various invertebrates including lobster, nudibranchs, and colorful sea stars. Divers frequently encounter California spiny lobsters, especially during night dives. Harbor seals and sea lions often visit the area, occasionally interacting with divers.

The underwater landscape surrounding Bird Rock features a rocky reef system extending outward from the island. Depths range from shallow areas near the rock itself to approximately 100 feet at the deeper edges. The site includes walls, ledges, and extensive kelp forests creating a diverse underwater environment. Different sides of the rock offer varying exposures to current and surge, allowing dive masters to select the most suitable area based on conditions and diver experience.

As a boat-only site, parking is available at the harbors where dive boats depart on the mainland, typically Long Beach, San Pedro, or Dana Point. Most offer paid parking with day rates. For divers staying on Catalina, water taxis and local dive operations can be arranged from Two Harbors, which is very close to the site.

Facilities are limited to what's provided on dive boats. Most charter operations offer basic amenities including freshwater rinse, restrooms, and light refreshments.

Moderate to high during summer months and weekends. Its popularity as a reliable dive site means it can get busy, particularly when conditions at other sites are challenging. However, the extensive area around the rock allows multiple groups to dive without significant interference.

While generally more protected than open-water sites, currents can still develop, particularly during tide changes. Surge can affect shallower areas during periods of swell. The thick kelp forest requires attentive navigation and proper buoyancy control to avoid entanglement. Boat traffic in the area necessitates the use of dive flags and surface awareness. The site is home to some of the island's larger lobsters, but note that Catalina falls within California fishing regulations requiring appropriate licenses and adherence to season and size limits for any collection.
