Blue Cavern Point

Entry and exit are from the dive boat. The site can experience strong currents, so operators typically use live boat drop procedures rather than anchoring. Negative descents may be necessary during stronger current periods.

Accessible only by boat, with numerous dive operators offering trips from the mainland. The boat ride is typically 1.5-2 hours, depending on departure location. Some Catalina-based operators also run regular trips to the site.

Due to its protected status within a marine reserve, Blue Cavern boasts exceptionally abundant marine life. Large schools of blacksmith, opaleye, and señorita create dense fish aggregations in midwater. The kelp forest hosts numerous calico bass, garibaldi, and impressive California sheephead. Lucky divers may encounter giant black sea bass (particularly in summer months), harbor seals, sea lions, and even bat rays cruising through the kelp. Invertebrate life is equally impressive, with numerous colorful nudibranchs, sea stars, and anemones adorning the rocky surfaces.

The site features a dramatic underwater point with steep walls dropping to depths over 130 feet. The signature blue cavern is a large overhang/semi-cave at about 40-80 feet depth that appears to glow blue when illuminated by sunlight. A dense, healthy kelp forest covers much of the area, creating a cathedral-like atmosphere as sunlight filters through the canopy. The underwater terrain includes walls, ledges, and boulder fields providing numerous exploration opportunities at various depths.

As a boat-only site, parking is available at the harbors where dive boats depart on the mainland, typically Long Beach, San Pedro, or Dana Point. Most offer paid parking with day rates. For divers staying on Catalina, local dive operations can arrange transportation from Avalon.

Facilities are limited to what's provided on dive boats. Most charter operations offer basic amenities including freshwater rinse, restrooms, and light refreshments.

Moderate during summer months and weekends. As a protected reserve within USC Wrigley Marine Science Center boundaries, there are some restrictions on access, which helps limit overcrowding. Still, its popularity means multiple boats may visit the site, especially during peak season.

Strong currents are common, particularly around the point itself and during tide changes. The site's exposed location means conditions can change rapidly, especially in afternoon hours when winds typically increase. Depths beyond recreational limits are easily accessible, requiring careful depth monitoring. As a marine protected area, no collecting or fishing is permitted, and divers should practice strict no-touch protocols. The nearby USC Wrigley Marine Science Center occasionally conducts research in the area, so respect any temporary closures or restrictions.
