Ship Rock

Entry and exit are from the dive boat. The site's exposure to open ocean conditions can occasionally make entries and exits challenging, particularly during periods of surge or current.

Accessible only by boat, with numerous dive operators offering trips from the mainland. The boat ride is typically 1.5-2 hours, depending on departure location. Catalina-based operators also run regular trips to the site with shorter transit times.

The site supports rich marine ecosystems due to its exposure to nutrient-rich currents. Common sightings include bright orange garibaldi, sheephead, schools of blacksmith, and kelp bass. The kelp forest hosts numerous invertebrate species including colorful nudibranchs, lobster, and various crab species. Lucky divers may encounter harbor seals, sea lions, or even giant black sea bass during summer months.

The pinnacle rises dramatically from depths exceeding 130 feet to within 15 feet of the surface. The main structure features vertical walls, ledges, and shelves at various depths. A lush kelp forest surrounds the peak, creating a cathedral-like environment with dancing light rays in good conditions. The north side typically features the most dramatic drop-offs, while the southern approach offers a more gradual slope with boulder fields.

As a boat-only site, parking is available at the harbors where dive boats depart on the mainland, typically Long Beach, San Pedro, or Dana Point. Most offer paid parking with day rates. For divers staying on Catalina, water taxis and local dive operations can be arranged from Two Harbors or Avalon.

Facilities are limited to what's provided on dive boats. Most charter operations offer basic amenities including freshwater rinse, restrooms, and light refreshments.

Moderate to high during summer months and weekends with favorable conditions. As one of the most popular boat dive sites around Catalina, multiple dive boats often visit the site simultaneously, especially during peak season. Early morning dives typically offer less crowded conditions.

Currents can be strong and unpredictable, especially around the tip of the pinnacle and on the exposed sides. Boat traffic in the area requires vigilant surface awareness and proper use of dive flags. Surge can affect divers even at depth during periods of significant swell. The site's exposed location means conditions can change rapidly, particularly in afternoon hours when winds typically increase. Depth requires careful monitoring of gas supply and bottom time.
