Crescent Beach/Honokohau Bay

Entry and exit are straightforward from the sandy beach. The protected nature of the cove means minimal wave action in normal conditions. The bottom transitions quickly from sand to a mix of coral and lava rock formations, so booties are recommended. During low tide, some exposed rocks may require careful navigation.

Shore dive with easy entry from a sandy beach. A short walk from the parking area leads directly to the entry point. The gradual slope makes for a comfortable surface swim to deeper areas.

The site hosts a variety of Hawaiian reef fish including yellow tang, butterfly fish, and triggerfish. Green sea turtles are common visitors, often seen resting on the coral or feeding in the shallow areas. Moray eels inhabit the many crevices in the lava rock, while octopuses can be spotted by patient observers. Occasional manta rays pass through the deeper sections, especially during plankton blooms.

The underwater landscape begins with a sandy entry that quickly gives way to coral formations and lava rock structures. The reef extends in a semi-circle following the contour of the beach, with depths ranging from 15-30 feet in the inner area to 40-60 feet further out. Several small lava tubes and swim-throughs can be found in the deeper sections. The southern end features larger coral formations and the best marine life density.

Free parking is available in a small gravel lot near the beach entrance. The lot can fill quickly during weekends and holidays, so early arrival is recommended. Some additional street parking may be found along the adjacent road.

Limited facilities include a portable toilet near the parking area and a small changing area. No freshwater showers or gear rinse stations are available on site. Several dive shops in Kailua-Kona offer tank fills and equipment rentals approximately 15 minutes away by car.

Moderate, with heavier use during weekends and tourist season. The site is popular with beginning divers due to its protected conditions and ease of access. Early morning dives typically offer a more solitary experience. Local dive shops occasionally bring training classes here, especially on weekends.

While generally protected, the site can experience surge during high surf conditions. The outer reef area may have mild currents, especially during tide changes. Some fire coral exists among the reef structures which can cause skin irritation if touched. Be mindful of boat traffic as small tour boats occasionally pass near the cove. The beach has little shade, so sun protection is essential between dives.
