Entry & Exit

Entry via a sandy beach with no steps; wade in easily. Exit by swimming back and walking out, watching for occasional surge.

Access

Shore dive only, with entry from a gently sloping sandy beach at the harbor.

What You'll See

Nudibranchs, octopuses, moray eels, reef fish, and occasional frogfish.

Underwater Topology

Sandy bottom with scattered rock islands and sponge-covered structures, ideal for macro life.

Parking

Ample parking at Kawaihae Harbor lot near the boat wash station; arrive early during canoe events to secure a spot.

Facilities

Boat wash station for rinsing gear; no on-site restrooms or showers. Nearest facilities are at Hapuna Beach State Park, about 15 minutes away.

Crowd Factor

Low, with occasional snorkelers and divers, though canoe events can increase parking demand in summer.

Look Out For

Visibility can be low, especially with swell, so navigate carefully. Summer offers calmer conditions and more nudibranchs. Use a dive flag as required by law. Booties recommended for sandy entry.

How to Find It

From Kailua-Kona, take Highway 19 north for about 45 minutes toward Kawaihae. Turn left into Kawaihae Harbor, park near the boat wash station, and walk to the sandy beach entry on the harbor’s north side.
