Honaunau Bay (Two Step)

Entry is via the namesake 'Two Step' formation - a natural lava rock shelf that forms two convenient steps into the water. Time entry between wave surges. The rock can be slippery but offers an exceptionally easy entry compared to most shore dives. Exit at the same location by timing the surge to help lift you onto the bottom step.

Shore dive with a short walk from the parking area to the entry point. The bay is accessible via a natural rock formation that creates two underwater 'steps' for easy entry and exit.

The protected bay hosts diverse marine life including numerous Hawaiian green sea turtles that use the area as a cleaning station. Spinner dolphins frequently visit the bay, particularly in morning hours. Reef fish are abundant, including yellow tang, butterflyfish, parrotfish, and triggerfish. The coral formations provide habitat for moray eels, octopuses, and various crustaceans. Occasional reef sharks may be spotted in deeper waters.

The bay features a healthy coral reef system that slopes gradually from the shoreline. The inner bay has coral formations in 10-30 feet of water, while the outer region slopes to 40-70 feet with more dramatic topography including lava arches, small caves, and coral-encrusted lava fingers extending seaward. The northern side of the bay typically has the best coral coverage and marine life concentration.

Limited parking is available in the small lot near the entry point. Arrive early (before 8am) to secure a spot, especially on weekends. Overflow parking is sometimes available along the access road. The nearby National Historical Park has additional parking for a fee if visiting the cultural site before or after diving.

Basic facilities include portable toilets near the parking area. No freshwater showers are available at the site, though some divers bring jugs of fresh water for rinsing. More complete facilities can be found at nearby beaches.

High, especially between 9am and 2pm when tour groups and snorkelers are most prevalent. Early morning (6-8am) offers more serene conditions and better chances to encounter dolphins. The bay is large enough that divers can find less crowded areas by swimming beyond the inner reef where most snorkelers stay.

The site is within a Marine Life Conservation District where touching coral or marine life is strictly prohibited. The rocky entry point requires careful footing, especially when wet. Surge can be significant during high surf conditions, making entry and exit challenging. Strong currents can occasionally develop on the outer reef. Watch for boat traffic as tour boats sometimes enter the bay, particularly in the morning hours when delivering snorkelers.
